Lovely, folk-oriented festival, as popular with families as it is with earnest young men with beards. Headliners include Wilco and Bon Iver. Weekend tickets £115 (ages 13-17 £50, age 12 and under free).
Where to stay Just a short drive away, the New White Lion (01550 720685, www.newwhitelion.co.uk; doubles from £90) in Llandovery is a gorgeous, intimate retreat. Opt for the largest room, the wonderfully named Physicians of Myddfai. The Angel Hotel (01873 857121, www.angelhotelabergavenny.com; doubles from £85), a Georgian coaching inn just around the corner from the festival in Abergavenny, is another stylish and comfortable option with a smattering of family room.

Its enviable position in the Cannock Chase country park is the perfect peaceful antidote to two days of beered-up Oasis fans swaggering between drinks tents.

Where to Stay: For the Reading Festival, opt for the out-of-town Thameside charms of Goring's 18th-century inn the Miller of Mansfield (01491 872829, ), which blends traditional and modern features. Simply catch a train into Reading for the festival. Bestival (11-13 September), Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight (Bestival still offers a line-up that most other festivals could only dream of. Weekend tickets £140, age 13-15, £70, (age 12 and under free).

The seven-room B&B is a celebration of all things winged and magical, even the gardens, which twinkle with fairylights from dusk onwards, offer an enchanted folly. 7. Research your festival carefully-some offer play groups and creches.

8. As soon as you get their check the map so you know where the toilets, wash areas and emergency facilities are.

9. Wheelbarrows or a Radio Flyer Wagon these are a good way to get tired kids back to the tent.

10. Try to get a pass which allows you to park close to where you are camped so you don't have to walk for miles back to your car.

Beef Wellington is a preparation of beef tenderloin coated with pâté (often pâté de foie gras) and duxelles, which is then wrapped in puff pastry and baked. The origin of the name is unclear but one theory is that beef Wellington was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Some have suggested this was due to his love of a dish of beef, truffles, mushrooms, Madeira wine, and pâté cooked in pastry, but there is no evidence to say for sure. Other accounts simply credit the name to a patriotic chef wanting to give an English name to a variation on the French filet de bœuf en croûte during a period when England was often at odds with France. Still another theory is that the dish is not named after the Duke himself, but rather that the finished joint was thought to resemble one of the brown shiny military boots which were named after him.

How a Hunter Wellington is Made

If you live in rural Britain or simply love walking in the countryside all year round, there is one item of country clothing that you are bound to own: a pair of good, stout Wellington boots. Whether you have to contend with mud, puddles or a mixture of both, rubber wellies are undoubtedly the best footwear for the job.

Hunter Wellington boots are by far the best-known wellies in the UK, even receiving worldwide fame with fans located across the world. Having been making them for more than a century, the Hunter company has mastered the design of rubber Wellingtons and has developed specialist pairs for various uses.

In its manufacture of welly boots, Hunter uses a variety of materials to obtain the best possible performance and comfort. However, not just any old materials are chosen for use in Hunter wellies. New fabrics go through a rigorous process of testing to ensure that they will perform at the highest levels and will be incredibly durable. Durability is an especially important issue to consider, since most Hunter Wellington boots will be worked hard by their wearer and it is essential that they will last.

What are my Hunter boots made from?

Once the rubber arrives, it is mashed up, beaten and rolled out onto huge cutting tables, where different cutters (not unlike pastry cutters) are employed for each individual section of the boot. Step-by-step, each section is then placed on top of a metal 'last' (pictured at top of page) - starting with the neoprene or leather sock, then the heel piece, the rubber on the outside, the sole, and finishing with the famous Hunter logo - until an individual boot has been created.

The boots are then cooked, or vulcanised, in big ovens so all the molecules in the rubber are bonded together, making it stronger and waterproof. The boots are then trimmed, checked over thoroughly by one of the factory workers and packaged up for sale. There is very little waste as the unvulcanised rubber trimmings from the cutting table can just be mashed up and used again.

There are a number of fabrics which are used in the extensive range of Hunter wellies, and not just the supple green rubber that makes up the outer surface of the boot. These materials include a number of advanced textiles which have been specially developed for high performance clothing and footwear.

Some Hunter boots include the revolutionary Outlast fabric. Amazingly, this was originally formulated for NASA in order to offer the best possible temperature control for astronauts through their clothing. This clever fabric takes excess heat and stores it until such a time it is needed, then releases it. In boots, an Outlast fabric means that your feet should not get either too hot or too cold.

Another material that is utilised by Hunter in its production of outdoor footwear is the eVENT fabric. This offers all-day dryness, as tiny pores in the material allow sweat and water vapour to be wicked away from the skin. It also promotes warmth, as dry skin is more likely to be warm skin. eVENT fabrics feature particularly prominently in the range of Hunter walking and shooting boots.
